Playing the racing game

Bets here are in-game money only. Nothing about this is a real wager. The game says that on its own bet shop, and it is the first thing this guide says too: nothing you stake in it is money, and nothing it pays out is either.

  1. Start a career

From Open Horse Racing on Play, the game asks for Your name and a name for the yard, then Start the career. Starting the career sets up your yard with £2,000 of in-game money. A saved career is picked up with Continue saved career.

  2. Your name is the yard’s name

The name you typed is used everywhere the game speaks to you: the tab title, the yard heading, the diary, the race card’s list of your runners, the result and the end of the day. Leave it blank and the game says “the yard” instead.

  3. The yard

Yard is home: your animals, their condition, and the day’s hours. Each day has 8 hours; training, travelling and racing spend them. Town and Sale ring are where money leaves and animals arrive.

  4. Entering a race

Races lists the card. On a race, each of your eligible animals has an Enter — button carrying the entry fee. An entry is a commitment: the fee is paid when you press it.

  5. Betting in-game money

The field and the bet shop sit under the race. Choose a stake (£5, £10, £25, £50) and an animal; the odds are the game’s own. Run the race runs it once everything you entered is declared.

  6. Reading the result

See the result shows the finishing order, your runners’ places and prize money, and each bet as won or lost with what came back.

  7. The day ending

End day closes the day and writes it to the diary. A closed day cannot be reopened. Save now saves at any time; New career replaces the career only when you press Start the career at the end of the wizard.
